Item Description
You are purchasing a framed print of the work of American realist artist Andrew Wyeth, one of the leading and perhaps most controversial artists of the Twentieth Century. Beloved by many fans, criticized by advocates of the abstractionist school, Wyeth has continued on his own road, finding inspiration in the world of his homes in Pennsylvania and Maine and the people around him there for well over sixty years. Christina's World is perhaps Wyeth's most famous painting, completed in 1948. Christina Olsen, a family friend living in Maine, did not herserf pose for this painting (Wyeth's wife Betsy actually modeled for it), but the reference to Christina's muscular difficulty is clear in the composition. Ms. Olsen, according to the references, suffered from an undiagnosed disease that substantially wasted her lower muscles, and crawled to get about her farm. Here, she is returning from her vegetable garden to her house in the distance. The main elements of Wyeth's frequent themes are all present: the simplicity, the focus on a primary foreground element, the distant background element a goal or object of desire. This single painting captured the imagination of the world, and solidified Wyeth's reputation. The original hangs today in the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. Tempera on panel; wooden frame. 1 prim. Why not hang a print of this important work in your own home?
