Item Description
You are purchasing a framed engraving of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, artist unknown. Dante, of course, was the author of the Commedia, or the Divine Comedy, that allegory of the soul's travels through Hell and Purgatory to reach Heaven and the bliss of the knowledge of God. Dante's mighty poem is considered the fountainhead of Italian literature, responsible for the Tuscan dialect of Italian being the standard form of that language today. In this engraving, as in so many portrayals, Dante is robed as a doctor of letters, and crowned with laurel leaves, the accolade of the greats in the classic tradition. Black and white; white matting. Cream marble frame. 1 prim. Excellent choice for a library, study or office decor. Give one to a librarian you know in world! (Incidentally, those interested in reading the Commedia, but who have got no Italian, are directed to the excellent translation by Dorothy L. Sayers, published in the Penguin Classics.)
