Item Description
What is a Terra Stearman? This plane is a high-prim replica of the classic flight trainer biplane used by several countries from the 1930s onwards. Although there are many variants of the Stearman, this particular version is painted as a US Army PT-17. There are still many Stearmans in civilian use today.
Like the real Stearman, this plane lets you hand over control of the plane to the person in the second seat. Flight instructors can use this plane to teach basic piloting skills.
Why "high-prim"? Due to the limitations of Second Life's physics engine, vehicles in Second Life are limited to 30 prims, and are a bit low on detail. The Terra Stearman breaks through the physics prim limit with a detailed 254-prim model.
Yes! This is a fully physical aircraft that uses Second Life vehicle physics to move. The result is the most fluid and agile flight you have ever seen in a high-prim aircraft.
What you get with your Terra Stearman...
- The Stearman control panel HUD.
- A flyable, 2-seat Stearman (rezzed from the HUD).
- A high-prim unscripted display model that you can park next to your home or runway.
- Extra fuel.
Features!
- One of the most detailed flyable biplanes in Second Life.
- Advanced flight model that incorporates angle of attack, lift, stall speed, ground taxiing and much more!
- Realistic mechanical details like engine temperature and fuel.
- The HUD control panel includes: altimeter, airspeed indicator, artificial horizon, engine temperature indicator, fuel gauge, throttle indicator and controls for various aircraft functions.
- Moving control surfaces. As you fly, you can see the control surfaces respond.
HISTORICAL NOTES
The "Stearman" was originally built as the "Stearman model 75" by the Stearman Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s. Boeing acquired the company in 1934 and sold the Stearman to the US Army Air Corps in two variants, designated PT-13 and PT-17. Known also as the "Kaydet", the plane became used by many countries for both military and civil use. Although the plane has many official designations and nicknames (including "Yellow Peril"), the most common is simply "Stearman".
More than 10,000 Stearmans were built by the end of 1945. There are over a thousand still flying today.
